It’s Sunday night. How you feeling about the week ahead?
Philippians 4:6-7 says, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
You’ve all read that verse before, but two quick things:
First, we don’t practice this nearly enough. Many times when we pray, we don’t know what the answer is going to be. This is not one of those prayers. God is very specific that when we bring our requests to him, his peace will be our portion. There’s no doubt about this - we just have to ask.
And the peace isn’t just a warm fuzzy feeling. It’s an active peace, guarding our hearts and minds in the midst of trouble to keep them focused on God and his word and his promises.
Second, this is not just for you.
We had a difficult situation to deal with this past week (one of those you-don’t-know-what-the-week-will-hold things) and two separate times, one of my wife’s friends texted her to say she was praying for her right that very minute. She didn’t know what was going on - she just knew she was supposed to be praying, so she did.
And both times, we needed prayer right at those exact moments. And both times, there was peace that passes understanding.
So if you feel prompted this week to pray for a friend, don’t ignore what may be the leading of the Holy Spirit. Then let them know - it’s so encouraging.
And if your week holds difficult events, follow Paul’s advice. Your heart and mind will know peace even in the storm.
Grace and peace to you in the week ahead.
